TSI–Texas Success Initiative

TSI (Texas Success Initiative) Exemptions

Texas students demonstrate CCMR by meeting college readiness benchmarks via assessment.  The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state law created to ensure that all incoming college students are prepared for college-level reading, writing and math.  College ready students may begin taking college courses that count towards a degree.  If a student can show that they have met TSI requirements through assessment, they are "exempted" from completing developmental courses when starting college coursework. Developmental courses do not count towards a degree and are not covered by financial aid.

Students can meet TSI EXEMPTIONS if they meet one of these college readiness scores:

  • SAT
    • Evidence-Based Reading & Writing: 480
    • Math: 530
  • ACT
    • English & Reading (E+R): 40 combined
    • Mathematics: 22
    • No composite score is required
  • TSIA2
    • ELAR (English Language Arts & Reading): 945 with essay score 5, or less than 945 with diagnostic level 5–6 and essay score 5
    • Math: 950, or less than 950 with diagnostic level 6

It is the expectation that every senior will attempt to achieve TSI via SAT, ACT, and/or TSIA2 testing. Every public college in the state of Texas is required by law to have students TSI test. Testing scores are good for five years.
